Have you wondered what the difference is between a lip flip and lip filler? Often times we see photos of others that have had a lip flip and we’re confused, because their lips are fuller. We think that we know that answer, we talk amongst our friends and point out that this person on social media or a reality TV show has lip fillers. When in fact they’ve had a lip flip.
In this blog I will discuss the Lip Flip, what it is & what it involves.
What is it?
A lip flip is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that involves injecting a neurotoxin, usually Botox or a similar product, into the upper lip. Unlike traditional lip fillers that add volume to the lips, a lip flip aims to enhance the appearance of the lips by relaxing the muscles around the upper lip.
What does it involve?
Here’s a detailed breakdown of what happens during a lip flip:
The Consultation- The process typically begins with a consultation between the patient and the practitioner. During this discussion, the patient’s goals and expectations are assessed, and the practitioner determines if a lip flip is a suitable option.
Topical Anesthesia- Before the procedure, the option is given to apply a topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort during the injection process although it is a very quick treatment.
Injection Placement- The practitioner carefully injects small amounts of the neurotoxin into specific muscles around the upper lip. Commonly, the injections target the orbicularis oris muscle, which encircles the mouth. On occasion the practitioner may also inject two points on the lower lip to evert and project.
Muscle Relaxation- The neurotoxin works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the targeted muscles, causing them to relax. This relaxation prevents the upper lip from flipping inward when smiling or talking.
Results- Over the next few days to a week, the effects of the lip flip become noticeable as the muscles gradually relax. The upper lip appears slightly lifted, creating the illusion of more prominent and fuller lips.
Key Characteristics of a Lip Flip
Subtle Enhancement- A lip flip is known for providing subtle and natural-looking results. It enhances the natural shape of the lips without adding volume.
Improved Lip Show- By relaxing the muscles, the procedure allows more of the upper lip to be visible, creating a fuller appearance when smiling.
No Downtime- One of the advantages of a lip flip is that it typically involves minimal downtime. Patients can resume their normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Temporary Results- The effects of a lip flip are temporary, lasting around 2-4 months. This allows individuals to test the results before deciding if they want to continue with the treatment.
Complementary to Fillers- Some individuals choose to combine a lip flip with lip fillers to achieve a more comprehensive enhancement, addressing both muscle movement and volume.
It’s important to note that while a lip flip can offer appealing results, choosing a skilled and experienced practitioner is crucial for achieving the desired outcome and minimizing potential risks. As with any cosmetic procedure, individual responses may vary, and thorough consultation with a qualified professional is recommended to ensure that a lip flip is the right option for your goals.
